As an Advanced Project Engineer, you will play a key role in the planning, coordination and successful execution of complex engineering programmes.
This role requires a combination of strong engineering judgement, project leadership and stakeholder management. The individual will be expected to proactively drive engineering activities rather than simply track progress, identifying issues early and coordinating the engineering team to deliver effective solutions.
The successful candidate will act as a key engineering interface with Programme Management and work closely with Systems, RF, Hardware, Firmware, Mechanical engineering teams as well as Production, Quality, Supply Chain and other functional teams to coordinate engineering activities throughout the product lifecycle.
In this role, you will support the development and delivery of advanced aerospace and space communication products, including complex electronic and Software Defined Radio systems. You will combine strong engineering judgement with project execution skills to identify risks, resolve issues and maintain progress towards programme. milestones.
You will report directly to our Engineering Manager, and you’ll work out of our Edinburgh, UK location on an on-site work schedule.
ResponsibilitiesKey Responsibilities
- Own and coordinate the engineering execution of assigned projects or major work packages, ensuring delivery against agreed technical, schedule, cost and quality objectives
- Develop, maintain and communicate the engineering plan, including scope, deliverables, milestones, dependencies, resources and technical activities
- Ensure engineering activities remain aligned with overall programme objectives, customer requirements, contractual commitments and business priorities
- Translate programme and customer objectives into clear engineering activities, deliverables and execution priorities
- Support the definition and maintenance of the engineering scope of work, Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), schedules and resource plans
- Coordinate multidisciplinary engineering teams across areas such as Systems, RF, Hardware, Firmware, Software, Mechanical and Test Engineering
- Coordinate engineering resource requirements with functional and technical leaders and proactively identify resource constraints
- Manage and monitor engineering budgets, forecasts and resource utilisation associated with assigned engineering activities
- Identify, assess and manage technical and programme risks and opportunities, ensuring appropriate mitigation or recovery actions are established
- Lead the resolution of cross-functional technical and execution issues, ensuring clear ownership and timely closure
- Coordinate project activities with Programme Management, Production, Quality, Supply Chain and other key stakeholders
- Ensure engineering deliverables and supporting data packs are prepared and mature for formal programme and engineering reviews.
- Support and coordinate key lifecycle reviews such as SRR, PDR, CDR, TRR and associated technical reviews, where applicable
- Ensure baseline changes affecting engineering scope, schedule or budget are appropriately assessed and controlled
- Monitor engineering performance and provide clear reporting of status, risks, issues, dependencies and recovery actions to programme and engineering leadership
- Support customer technical interactions and programme reviews, providing clear communication on engineering status and technical matters
Key Skills and Qualifications
- Degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics or another relevant technical discipline, or equivalent industrial experience
- Significant experience working within a complex engineering environment, ideally within aerospace, defence, space or another highly regulated industry.
- Proven track record in leading or coordinating multidisciplinary engineering activities across the product development lifecycle
- Strong understanding of engineering project management principles, including planning, scheduling, cost management, resource management, risk management and change control
- Experience working through structured engineering development lifecycles and formal design reviews
- Ability to understand complex technical issues and communicate their programme, cost and schedule implications to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities, dependencies and stakeholders simultaneously
- Demonstrated ability to identify delivery risks early and proactively drive actions through to resolution
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience presenting engineering status and recommendations to senior stakeholders
- Ability to operate effectively with a high degree of autonomy and take ownership of engineering delivery
We Value
- Experience within aerospace, defence, space, communications or other highly regulated engineering environments
- Experience delivering complex electronic, RF, embedded, communications or Software Defined Radio products
- Knowledge of formal engineering lifecycle reviews such as SRR, PDR, CDR and TRR
- Experience with requirements management, configuration management, verification and validation, and engineering change control
- Experience with Work Breakdown Structures, integrated schedules, resource planning, cost forecasting and engineering performance management
- Understanding of Earned Value Management or similar programme-control methods. The internal PE definition explicitly includes engineering control-account performance and Earned Value monitoring
- Experience working directly with Programme Management, Manufacturing/ISC, Quality and Supply Chain organisations
- Experience interacting with customers and presenting technical or programme information at formal reviews
- Ability to influence across functional boundaries without relying on direct organisational authority
- Demonstrated technical leadership, mentoring and continuous-improvement mindset
What Success Looks Like
An effective Advanced Project Engineer will provide clear ownership of engineering execution. Engineering teams will understand their priorities, upcoming milestones and dependencies; programme leadership will have reliable visibility of engineering cost, schedule, risks and resource requirements; and technical issues will be identified and addressed before they become programme-level problems.
The role is therefore not primarily an administrative or reporting position. It requires an individual who can plan ahead, challenge constructively, coordinate technical teams and actively drive engineering delivery
