Toast is driven by building the all-in-one restaurant platform that helps restaurants operate their business, increase sales, engage guests, and keep employees happy. As we accelerate our  international expansion, we are growing our product counsel team, hiring a mid-level attorney to work alongside our other existing international product counsel to support our international growth. Candidates should have meaningful experience: (i) advising product and engineering teams building products across multiple jurisdictions; and (ii) advising international marketing teams. 


As Product and Marketing Counsel, you will work with multiple teams across the business including the product, engineering, marketing, compliance, and sales teams as well as in collaboration with other members of the Legal team. You will develop a deep understanding of Toast’s products, roadmaps, and processes in order to offer pragmatic legal advice, help the business identify and mitigate potential legal risks, and contribute to Toast’s international growth. Because this is a global role, you also must have flexibility to collaborate with partners in various time zones.


About this roll* (Responsibilities)

  • Advise on a broad range of issues including regulatory compliance, consumer protection, intellectual property and privacy, and providing practical advice to business stakeholders.
  • Work alongside and advising a variety of stakeholders across the product, engineering, and marketing teams, as well as other members of the Legal team, throughout the product development lifecycle (i.e. from the initial stages of product development through launch, including the review of marketing strategies and assets) for products launching around the world.
  • Partner collaboratively across multiple functions, exhibiting a deep understanding of how Toast products work and how their evolution is influenced by applicable laws and regulations. 
  • Contribute to playbooks for Product Legal to support Toast’s international expansion.
  • Advise on international marketing and content teams on customer-facing marketing and editorial content.  
  • Understand and stay up to date on international laws and regulations relating to the Toast platform.
  • Think creatively to navigate complex regulatory environments to ensure a smooth and compliant user experience.  

 Do you have the right ingredients*? (Requirements)

  • A recognized law degree, an admission in good standing as a solicitor or equivalent legal professional by the relevant regulatory body in Ireland, another EU member state, or Canada (including Quebec).
  • 6+ years of legal experience, in areas covering regulatory compliance, privacy, marketing,  intellectual property, and consumer protection across multiple jurisdictions. 
  • Exceptional communication skills and the ability to explain complex ideas in a succinct and impactful manner.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills and proven ability to communicate collaboratively with internal/external stakeholders as well as the ability to integrate into cross-functional teams with a cooperative and participatory approach.
  • Expertise across all jurisdictions is not required, provided that you have experience with researching, interpreting, and advising on a variety of international laws.
  • In-house counsel experience advising product, engineering, and marketing teams on legal issues related to new product development, enhancements, and feature requests.
  • Significant product and marketing law experience, specifically  with laws and regulations related to commercial and consumer products and marketing materials.
  • Experience and comfort working with fast paced technology, software, or fintech companies. 
  • Comfort navigating ambiguity and shifting priorities with a proactive and solutions-oriented mindset.
  • A solution-oriented, customer service, and growth mindset.

  • Experience advising on the laws of the UK, Australia, Canada, Ireland, and/or other EU member states.
