Your future role
Atlassian is seeking a highly experienced Director level attorney to join our team as our first commercial lawyer in India. This person will be an important part of the APAC legal team, supporting sales pursuits in India and other country and region specific initiatives as part of Atlassian's growth.
Working at Atlassian
Atlassians can choose where they work - whether in an office, from home, or a combination of the two. That way, Atlassians have more control over supporting their family, personal goals, and other priorities. We can hire people in any country where we have a legal entity.
Responsibilities
We're looking for a talented commercial transactions attorney to join our team to support our business in India, with flexibility to support in other APAC countries too. In this role, you will work with sales teams and other legal team members to review and respond to requests from current and prospective customers, as well as partner with many cross-functional stakeholders on sales pursuits, partner transactions, RFP responses and other commercial agreements.
As the first commercial legal attorney on the ground in India, you'll play a pivotal role in the APAC Commercial Legal team, helping the business scale. You will also have the opportunity to contribute to broader global and regional team legal projects, to our positive remote team culture and to participate in commercial legal matters in other geos. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced professional looking to further develop their in-house legal skills in the tech sector, apply their leadership skills as sole commercial lawyer in country, and become a key member of the extended Go-to-Market team.
Your future team
Atlassian's Legal Team is seen within Atlassian as an impactful business partner, serving our business with practical and business-oriented advice and solutions. Our team is highly collaborative and supportive - we love working with each other and cheer on our teammates successes.
You will report directly to the Senior Director, Commercial Legal - APAC. You will have lots of opportunities to work closely with other legal colleagues in APAC and globally, through day to day work and on projects.
In this role, you'll get to:
  • be an active part of our Commercial Legal Team, which supports Atlassian's enterprise sales business
  • become our go to market expert for India for the Commercial Legal Team and be our primary commercial legal advisor for the sales and partner teams in India. You'll also assist (as local expert) in strategic sourcing, commercial property, regulatory and other matters relevant to the local business
  • negotiate enterprise cloud and license agreements for Atlassian's products and services with sophisticated customers, including master license and services agreements.
  • conduct analysis and support tender processes with public sector customers.
  • partner and collaborate with other teams (locally and internationally), such as our privacy, risk and compliance, security, finance, accounting, product, deal desk and sales teams to facilitate contract reviews and internal process improvement, as well as enhancing our customer-facing agreements and forms
  • provide pragmatic, business-minded guidance on contract related issues and sales/procurement contracting strategy, ensuring compliance with local and international laws
  • develop supporting materials and provide trainings to educate our direct sales and channel teams on contract terms and other legal issues
  • build trusted relationships with our sales colleagues in the region, being extremely curious about our company's business priorities and being proactive in suggesting solutions, and
  • Advise business and corporate functions in the region in close collaboration with our specialist teams throughout the world.

More about you:
  • you're experienced working in matrixed organizations and building relationships with sales teams, sales leadership and local and international senior business partners and other cross-functional stakeholders
  • you've worked at international companies and have considerable expertise at applying both an international lense to the Indian market and explaining India specific legal issues to international peers. You're experienced collaborating with local and international stakeholders and peers of varying skill-sets, partnering to provide guidance and find solutions
  • you exhibit executive presence and influence, advising senior business leads internally and similarly representing Atlassian when dealing with customers and other third parties
  • you enjoy negotiating and closing deals collaboratively, taking a leadership position on resolution of contractual/pursuit issues where legal is a stakeholder
  • you bring empathy and understanding to your conversations with customers and clients, creating a path forward that balances company risk and customer needs
  • you are inherently curious and creative, enjoying learning as well as partnering and teaching
  • you enjoy working both remotely and in person, with people both locally and internationally, and you enjoy taking up new responsibilities and working autonomously in a multicultural, distributed team
  • you think creatively beyond the "legal" box to offer solutions for the business
  • you are curious about AI, working with AI tooling, and legal considerations relating to AI and AI product features and
  • you're a team player who loves to share your knowledge and best practices with your teammates, clients and colleagues.

On your first day, we'll expect you to:
  • have a local legal qualification with 12+ years PQE in good standing, a combination of private practice and in-house experience working with leading technology companies or multi-national corporations
  • have considerable experience handling b2b contract negotiations and have well rounded commercial acumen
  • have an understanding of related legal topics and their application to Indian businesses like data privacy, commercial property, incident response notification and similar issues relevant to technology transactions
  • be curious about Atlassian's products, culture, and business model
  • be enthusiastic to work in an international environment, learn and take on new responsibilities and help shape a growing business in the region
  • be curious about using AI in your daily work and about legal aspects of AI, and
  • experience working with customers in regulated industries (such as financial services, healthcare and telecommunications) and an understanding of the regulatory frameworks they operate under (locally and internationally).

We appreciate as a plus:
  • experience in the SaaS space and knowledge of industry norms (in contractual positions and issues resolution)
  • understanding of the various local and international privacy laws and industry response to fast changing regulatory landscapes
  • experience working as part of a global legal team for a multi-national Saas provider (or software licensor) and familiarity with the industry.
