Role Description

As a Software Engineer for Dropbox Paper, you’ll thrive in our team if you’re versatile, curious, and able to navigate ambiguity effectively. As the owner of your own impact, you have the freedom to choose how you approach problems. If you see yourself as a software engineer at heart who enjoys finding effective solutions to real-world engineering challenges rather than focusing on specific technology stacks, Paper is the team for you.

While your work will be primarily backend-focused, it will encompass both backend and frontend development, supporting a product with millions of active users. You don’t need to have a long list of technologies and skills to succeed, but you do need to be open to change and comfortable learning new technologies.

You will help strengthen the integration of Paper with Dropbox and guide Paper through the AI era at Dropbox.

Our Engineering Career Framework is viewable by anyone outside the company and describes what’s expected for our engineers at each of our career levels. Check out our blog post on this topic and more here.

Responsibilities
  • Own software solutions from design to delivery across multiple product areas in a multi-component system
  • Participate in the on-call rotation, which team members are encouraged to join voluntarily to help distribute the workload evenly
  • Act as the connector between frontend and backend, stepping in wherever there is a need
  • Contribute to the team culture through mentorship, interviewing, and active engagement in new initiatives
Requirements
  • 5+ years of software engineering experience
  • BS degree in Computer Science, a related technical field, or equivalent experience
  • Experience in both front-end and back-end development with a focus on scalable architectures
  • Proven track record developing and shipping a large-scale web application with a user-empathetic mindset
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with distributed message queues (Apache Kafka/Pulsar)
  • Experience with Javascript, Java/JVM, Typescript, React, Golang, or Python
  • Experience with AWS
  • Familiarity with text editing applications
  • Compensation

What you need to know about the Edinburgh Tech Scene

From traditional pubs and centuries-old universities to sleek shopping malls and glass-paneled office buildings, Edinburgh's architecture reflects its unique blend of history and modernity. But the fusion of past and future isn't just visible in its buildings; it's also shaping the city's economy. Named the United Kingdom's leading technology ecosystem outside of London, Edinburgh plays host to major global companies like Apple and Adobe, as well as a growing number of innovative startups in fields like cybersecurity, finance and healthcare.
