Altery is a regulated financial platform for people and businesses whose money moves across currencies, countries, platforms and financial rails. We operate through licensed entities and regulated partners, including EMI infrastructure in the UK and EU, connected to global payment networks and built to PCI DSS Level 1 and ISO/IEC 27001:2022 standards.
We're scaling across payments, EMI, wallets, cards, crypto and cross-border financial services — and we need an engineering leader who can turn that growth into reliable, predictable delivery.
The role
The Head of Engineering owns delivery execution, engineering performance and operational excellence across all engineering streams at Altery. It's a manager-of-managers role responsible for Delivery Governance across the organisation — making sure teams ship reliably and at scale, while keeping quality, resilience and cost efficiency in check.
You'll sit on the IT Governance Forum, represent the delivery agenda at the executive table, and shape how engineering scales alongside the business.
What you'll own
- Engineering leadership — lead and grow the engineering organisation. Manage all Delivery Leads (hiring, coaching, career progression) and build a culture of accountability and quality.
- Delivery governance — run the Delivery Governance function: standards, processes and predictable execution against committed roadmaps across every stream.
- Operational resilience — act as Major Incident Commander. Own release management, incident response and DORA / FCA operational resilience compliance.
- AI-enabled engineering — drive AI adoption across engineering, from capacity planning to incident detection, and measure the productivity gains it creates.
- Capacity & FinOps — allocate engineering capacity across streams, balance delivery against technical debt, and own cloud cost efficiency.
- Capability & DX — build competency frameworks and career ladders, and co-own the Developer Experience programme with Platform Leads.
What we're looking for
- Significant experience leading engineering organisations at scale, with proven manager-of-managers experience.
- Background in fintech, payments, banking, SaaS, crypto or another highly regulated, high-growth environment.
- Fluent in delivery frameworks — DORA / DevOps metrics, SPACE, Developer Experience, flow metrics — and modern CI/CD practice.
- Working knowledge of DORA (Digital Operational Resilience Act), FCA Operational Resilience requirements, and incident management in regulated environments.
- Hands-on experience driving AI adoption within an engineering organisation, with a way to measure what it actually improves.
- Calm, structured decision-making under pressure, with strong stakeholder and commercial judgement.
