Insurance Lawyer – at least 2 years PQE

Location: Edinburgh or London

Contract: Permanent

Brief

We are looking to recruit a non-contentious lawyer with insurance and related regulatory experience to join the firm's growing Insurance team in either Edinburgh or London where they will work closely with the firm’s established City practice [ranked as Tier 2 by Legal 500]. We would be interested in hearing from qualified lawyers of all seniorities, but ideally those with upwards of 2 years PQE.

Background

The Insurance team consists of 20 lawyers who focus on both contentious and non-contentious work (the split being roughly 50/50). The Insurance team sits within our wider Regulation, Insurance and Funds team. It also works closely with our Corporate Financial Services team, providing opportunities for close collaboration and cross team/firm working. The Insurance team's primary clients are leading global insurers such as those below as well as other London market entities, life companies and friendly societies, Lloyd's Syndicates, and international insurers with businesses in the UK. Particular highlights are the team's strength of key insurer client relationships and the strategic partnership / bancassurance projects borne out of those relationships. The team is also called upon to advise non-insurer firm clients on insurance related issues.

Clients include major global and UK insurance businesses like Allianz, Aviva, AXA, Bupa, Chesnara, Direct Line (now part of Aviva), Intact, Phoenix, Royal London, Scottish Friendly, Wesleyan and Zurich.  We also act for a number of broker groups and leading brand retail distributors.

The work will be both transactional and advisory, based around:

  • strategic partnership / bancassurance arrangements
  • drafting and negotiating distribution and outsourcing agreements
  • advising on retail and commercial product development
  • FCA and PRA regulatory issues (including investigations and enhanced supervision projects)
  • drafting and advising on regulatory issues (e.g. permitted links) relating to insurer investment arrangements
  • cross-border regulatory perimeter issues
  • reinsurance agreements (including captive programmes and supporting our Pension De-Risking Team)
  • insurance business transfers (including by way of renewal rights)
  • insurance sector M&A

The candidate will ideally have experience and exposure to some of these practice areas. The successful candidate should be able to be flexible in terms of undertaking similar tasks in relation to general insurance and life/wealth insurance products.  There will be a need to liaise with other teams such as Corporate with which there will be some overlap on business transfers and M&A matters.

The Candidate Required

The successful candidate will be a qualified lawyer, ideally with upwards of 2 years PQE. They must be technically excellent but, equally important, commercially aware and enthusiastic about business development.  They will be a team player with a strong client-focussed approach. They will also have excellent communication and organisational skills.
