SP Energy Networks (SPEN) will be delivering over £10 bn of investment in the GB electricity grid over the next 5 years, Contributing to the UK target  to get Net Zero. A major part of this is delivery of the EGL1 HVDC link in Joint Venture with National Grid. 

The Lead Engineer is responsible to the Engineering Manager (Eastern Green Link 1 HVDC), for developing and coordinating engineering activities associated with Civil, Primary Plant, Control & Protection Cable design and manufacturing works and other equipment as described below. The position will also be working closely with relevant position holders within EGL1 Commercial, Delivery and Finance Workstreams as well as technical teams in SPEN and NGET to ensure that all technical activities are managed effectively.

You will support the Workstream Lead by applying your engineering knowledge and experience to facilitate the coordination of all Engineering activities on the EGL1 project. This includes engaging effectively with internal and external stakeholders to ensure that cohesive delivery of interacting engineering activities.

What you’ll be doing

Managing the procurement and delivery of expert external engineering services which are required to support Design and Manufacturing Assurance activities for EGL1 HVDC  Converter  equipment and HVDC Cable and accessories.

Coordinating the participation of EGL1 Engineers in Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and Type Test witnessing visits with EGL1 Contractors.

 Leading discussions and establishment of post-commissioning agreements with EGL1 Cable and Convertor Contractors , e.g. Post-Commissioning Maintenance Contracts.

Carry out regular reviews of the Engineering Design and Manufacturing Programmes to ensure that deliverables are on schedule and any required expert technical support is provided on time. 

Arranging and leading regular coordination meetings between EGL1 and NGET & SPEN technical stake holders.

Coordinating the collection of Asset data from the Contractors.

Performing all duties with, and promote internally and externally, a strong emphasis on health, safety, quality and environmental compliance and continuous improvement.

Drive industry best practice and technological advances within the project team/department.

What you’ll bring

Degree in Engineering discipline or equivalent experience. Ideally be a Chartered Engineer or working towards membership of a professional institution.

Awareness of UK Health and Safety legislation and the specific regulations which apply to engineering and construction projects such as EGL1. 

Understanding of the engineering processes associated with the development of major strategic infrastructure projects. 

Proven people management and leadership skills

Excellent influencing and stakeholder management skills

Proven experience as a Design or Project Engineer within Major Power Utilities construction projects.
