Leads first-line risk and control advice across retail and customer operations, focusing on regulatory, conduct, and operational risk. You will be a critical part of a first-line risk team providing expert advice and constructive challenge across conduct, regulatory and operational risk. You will bring a strong focus on how artificial intelligence, automation and data can improve the way risks are understood, and controls are designed, operated, monitored and evidenced.

Working with business, change, technology, data and risk colleagues, you will identify practical opportunities to simplify and modernise processes and controls. You will help business teams move from manual and detective sample activity towards more automated, preventative and data-led approaches, ensuring that change is proportionate, explainable, appropriately governed and aligned to risk appetite, internal policies and applicable regulations.

Customer outcomes will remain at the heart of the role. You will help ensure that the use of AI and automation strengthens rather than weakens accountability, supports effective human oversight and produces reliable evidence that risks are being managed and customers are receiving fair outcomes.

Please note that the Retail and Group Customer Operations Risk team is made up of different level roles and we are currently recruiting for multiple vacancies. There are variations in the level of experience required and in-role responsibilities depending on the role. If you are interested but unsure which role to apply for, feel free to reach out to the Recruiting Manager for an informal chat.

At Nationwide we offer hybrid working wherever possible. More rewarding relationships are supported through our hybrid approach, bringing colleagues together across our UK wide estate, whilst also supporting generous access to home working. We value our time in the office to solve problems, to learn, and to feel connected.

For this job you'll spend at least two days per week, or if part time you'll spend 40% of your working time, based at either our Swindon, London, Bournemouth, Northampton, Dunfermline, Sheffield, Wakefield, Glasgow or Gosforth office. If you’re based at our Glasgow office, this will apply from 1 April 2027 and ahead of that there will be a need to regularly connect with colleagues for collaboration events. If you are aligned to our Gosforth hub (as this is your nearest location), there will be a need to regularly connect with colleagues for collaboration events. This is anticipated to be weekly in Gosforth. If your application is successful, your hiring manager will provide further details on how this works. You can also find out more about our approach to hybrid working here.

Nationwide is committed to the redeployment of our employees impacted by change, as such applications for redeployment candidates will be prioritised in this recruitment process.

Responsibilities

What you’ll be doing

As a Risk and Control Manager, you will be a key member of the Risk Advice Team and provide risk support across Retail and Group Customer Operations business areas, building trusted and influential relationships with senior stakeholders.

You will lead our contribution to modernisation and the adoption of AI within business processes and controls. This will include helping teams identify appropriate use cases, understand new or changing risks, define proportionate control requirements and embed clear accountability, human oversight, traceability and ongoing monitoring. You will challenge whether proposed solutions are explainable, reliable and capable of delivering consistent customer and control outcomes.

A key part of the role will be proactively finding opportunities to modernise the existing control environment. You will work with process owners, control owners, change, technology and data specialists to reduce manual activity, remove duplication and introduce more automated and preventative controls. You will encourage teams to consider controls as part of process and technology design, rather than relying primarily on retrospective sample-based checking.

You will champion a more data-led approach to control management, helping teams use relevant information to identify emerging risk, monitor control performance and spot unusual patterns or deterioration earlier for quick correction. You will support the development of meaningful indicators, automated evidence and continuous or near-continuous monitoring where this is appropriate, while challenging data quality, completeness and interpretation.

You will maintain a comprehensive understanding of the business area’s risk and control profile, identifying control weaknesses, technology dependencies and opportunities for improvement. You will help assess whether controls remain proportionate as processes and technologies evolve, and you will provide clear and timely insight to governance forums, committees and senior stakeholders.

You will work collaboratively with colleagues across business and risk teams, including colleagues in 2nd and 3rd line, to support a joined-up approach to risk and control management. You will contribute to cross-risk and cross-functional initiatives that build organisational capability in responsible AI, control automation and data-led risk management, sharing practical learning and promoting consistent standards.

As a senior member of the Retail Risk Team, you will coach colleagues to build confidence in AI, automation, data and modern control practices, while fostering an inclusive, curious and improvement-focused environment in which diverse views and constructive challenge are encouraged.

About you

We’re looking for someone who combines strong risk and control judgement with curiosity about existing and emerging technologies and a practical track record of improving processes and modernising controls. You do not need to be a data scientist or software engineer, but you will need to understand how AI, automation and data can change risk and control design, ask the right questions and work confidently with technical specialists.

  • Experience of assessing or supporting change involving AI, machine learning, intelligent automation, workflow tools, analytics or other data-led capabilities, including consideration of the associated risks, controls and governance
  • The ability to identify where automation or data could improve prevention, detection, monitoring, assurance or reporting, balanced with sound judgement about where human oversight and intervention remain essential
  • Experience of providing accurate, objective and pragmatic advice with constructive challenge, while maintaining impartiality, to BAU and Change activity
  • Proven ability to communicate complex risk and regulatory matters clearly to stakeholders at different levels, with strong relationship management, communication and influencing skills to help build trust and maintain relationships with a variety of stakeholders across all levels of the society and externally
  • Strong judgement, influencing and facilitation skills, with a proven ability to demonstrate decisiveness and sound judgement on a consistent basis, collaborating with colleagues and providing a solution-oriented approach
  • A relevant risk, compliance or professional qualification, or equivalent practical experience

  • Say it straight - We are brave in speaking out and saying what we think – we’re honest and direct with good intent, openly sharing diverse perspectives to reach the best conclusions and using language everyone can understand

  • Push for better - We don’t settle for mediocrity, we challenge the status quo, taking responsibility for continuous improvement and personal development

  • Get it done - We prioritise what will have the greatest impact, we are decisive, and we take accountability for delivering brilliant customer outcomes
