Together we are Trusted to Serve Scotland.

It’s not every job where you make a difference for the people of Scotland. But it’s what’s behind every job here.

Our work keeps Scotland’s water flowing, from reservoir to tap – and from sewer to treatment plant.

Sound good? We're looking for Metering Technicians to join our Customer Excellence and Resilience Team in:

  • Stirling to Perth
  • Glasgow to Forth Valley
  • East Lothian (Edinburgh towards the Borders)
  • West Lothian (Edinburgh towards Bathgate)
  • Dumfries to Castle Douglas

In this role you’ll spend a fair amount of time working alone from site, so you’ll need to be self-motivated, but still eager to contribute to your team’s goals. You'll be part of a great team with loads of experience, and together we run Proactive and Reactive Wholesale activities across Scotland. Our big mission? To shake things up and achieve our goal of becoming a 'Great Wholesaler.' You'll be collaborating with the Wholesale Service Desk, Revenue & Wholesale teams, and our Alliance Partners. Plus, when the need arises working with other internal and external stakeholders will be essential.

What you’ll do

Your number one priority is resolving customer issues. You’ll take control of any situation, investigate problems and come up with solutions – always making sure they’re kept up to date.

You’ll also carry out routine repairs and maintenance on our metering assets. All the while putting health and safety first, carry out risk assessment and audits on our Alliance Partners. DOMS Impact Assessment Form is on your to-do list as well.

You'll also be doing surveys to understand customer supply arrangements for water and waste water, including some complex sites and dye testing. Having plumbing skills to carry out meter installs, exchanges and disconnections will be helpful.

Producing accurate field reports from your visits will be essential to provide License Providers with the information they need. We've got targets to meet, so making sure you handle your metering tasks like a pro is a big deal.

What you’ll need

You've got to be a customer service champion, preferably with plumbing knowledge. You should know your way around the rules and regulations, like the Sewerage Scotland Act and Water Scotland Act as well as Health and Safety at Work Act. You will also have strong IT and your communication skills should be top-notch, whether you're typing or talking. You’ll be using digital equipment and apps throughout the day. You’ll need report writing skills too, enough to get your point across clearly and accurately.

Flexibility is the name of the game and working from various locations will be required. You will have knowledge of DOMS policies and procedures, and an understanding of the Hygiene Code of Practice and Streetworks (NRSWA), would be great. You'll also need a valid UK driver's license. Beyond that, we’re looking for a few ‘nice-to-haves’. If you're okay with flexible working hours, including the occasional late-night or overnight stay. And if have knowledge of tools like Salesforce/Youreka, GIS/Geofield/Field Maps, and Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Powerpoint), that's a plus too.

Looking out for you

While the work we do is important, we know it’s not the only thing that matters. That’s why we make sure you have everything you need to find a good work-life balance.

This role has some weekend working. But you’ll get plenty of time to recharge with 38 days of holiday every year (including public holidays). And you can even buy five more if you need a little extra time. You can also take time off to volunteer in your community.

When it comes to major life events we have family-friendly policies around adoption, maternity, and parental leave. And for the everyday? We embrace flexible working.

For your future, there’s our pension (the ‘know-what-you’ll-get-when-you-retire’ kind), and life assurance.

As for some nice extras? You can expect an annual company bonus. Not to mention access to SW Splash – handy rewards that can save you money on holidays, bills, and shopping.

The not-so-small print

This role will be a Grade 5. If you’re new to Scottish Water, you’ll join us on a starting salary of £29,800. Performance-driven pay progression would then allow you to move through the range to a maximum of £35,760.

If you’re interested in this role – or know someone else who might be - we’ll be accepting applications until midnight on the Sunday 8th June 2025.

As part of your application, please highlight the location(s) of the role that you wish to be considered for.

Please include with your application a covering letter, explaining why you're a good candidate for the role.

Job offers at Scottish Water are conditional, and will be confirmed on completion of our pre-employment screening, e.g. referencing, criminal record checks, license checks, etc. Screening is conducted on our behalf by a third party, and must be completed before your start date. Don’t worry - we’ll only start these checks once you’ve accepted an offer.

A few final things worth knowing…

Research shows that some people avoid applying for jobs unless they can meet every single criteria. If you’re interested in this job, but don’t tick all the boxes, apply anyway! We hardly ever hire people who can do every part of a job from Day One. Everyone has a learning curve. So don’t rule yourself out!

Let us know if there are any changes we can make to our recruitment process to help you perform at your best. Lots of our people have disabilities or neurodiverse conditions (including some of our recruiters!). We're also aware that some people might be experiencing temporary challenges because of life events, like menopause. We’re very used to making adjustments, so please don’t be afraid to ask.

As part of our commitment to developing a flourishing Scotland, it’s important that all our employees are Scottish taxpayers. If you join us, your home address will need to be in Scotland. If you don’t already live here, you'll need to commit to moving here within your first three months.

Finally (finally!), candidates who haven’t submitted an application in the last 12 months will have their records removed from our recruitment database. You won’t need to do anything. Your data will be automatically deleted.

We’re here to help. Ask us anything at [email protected]
