Together we are Trusted to Serve Scotland.

An exciting opportunity is available for a permanent Energy Billing Analyst within the Scottish Water Finance Directorate.

Join Scottish Water's Energy Team, where we focus on reducing energy costs and promoting sustainability. In this role, you'll manage the Billing Validation and Payment Process, ensuring accuracy and timely payments of energy bills.

What you’ll do

Managing the contract with the external consultant involves overseeing the validation of invoices to ensure accuracy and compliance. This includes regularly reviewing the services provided, addressing any discrepancies, and ensuring that all invoicing aligns with agreed-upon terms. You'll also produce high-quality reports maintaining a high standard of English in all written communications.

In this role, you will analyse complex and large datasets to identify trends and solve problems effectively. Utilizing tools like Excel databases, you will interpret and manage data efficiently. Presenting technical concepts in a clear and accessible manner to non-specialists will be part of your responsibilities.

Ensuring that energy bills are paid promptly and reflect the highest degree of accuracy is crucial for maintaining financial efficiency. This responsibility entails verifying billing amounts, monitoring payment deadlines, and implementing processes to prevent errors.

Effectively managing billing queries with electricity suppliers is essential for resolving discrepancies and maintaining accurate records. This involves proactive communication to address issues, negotiating favourable terms when necessary, and ensuring that all billing information is accurate and up-to-date.

Additionally, ensuring that all sites are on the optimal tariff and capacity level helps in managing energy costs efficiently. This task requires regular assessment of energy usage patterns, comparison of available tariffs, and adjustments to capacity levels to align with operational needs and cost-saving opportunities.

What you’ll need

This role requires a strong combination of analytical, technical, communication, and stakeholder management skills. The successful candidate will be experienced in analysing and interpreting large, complex datasets to identify trends, patterns, and insights that support effective decision-making and problem-solving.

Experience in Microsoft Excel and working with databases are essential, alongside the ability to manage data accurately, maintain data quality, and produce meaningful reports and analysis.

The postholder will be confident presenting information, producing reports, and communicating insights that enable stakeholders to understand complex issues and make informed decisions.

The role also requires excellent relationship-building and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to engage effectively with colleagues at all levels, understand their requirements, and deliver solutions that meet business needs.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills, combined with a customer-focused approach, will be essential in developing productive working relationships and ensuring a high standard of service delivery.

In addition, the successful candidate will demonstrate excellent organisational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritise competing demands while maintaining accuracy and meeting deadlines. A proactive, analytical mindset, coupled with strong problem-solving abilities and a commitment to continuous improvement, will be key to success in this role.

Don’t worry - we’ll only start these checks once you’ve accepted an offer.

A few final things worth knowing…

Research shows that some people avoid applying for jobs unless they can meet every single criteria. If you’re interested in this job, but don’t tick all the boxes, apply anyway! We hardly ever hire people who can do every part of a job from Day One. Everyone has a learning curve. So don’t rule yourself out!

Let us know if there are any changes we can make to our recruitment process to help you perform at your best. Lots of our people have disabilities or neurodiverse conditions (including some of our recruiters!). We're also aware that some people might be experiencing temporary challenges because of life events, like menopause. We’re very used to making adjustments, so please don’t be afraid to ask.

As part of our commitment to developing a flourishing Scotland, it’s important that all our employees are Scottish taxpayers. If you join us, your home address will need to be in Scotland. If you don’t already live here, you'll need to commit to moving here within your first three months.
