Job Description

Wood Mackenzie’s Carbon Research team aspires to enable clients across the energy value chain to understand and respond to market and portfolio-related climate risks and opportunities by providing comprehensive, decision-useful carbon data and analytics. Some of the services we provide include calculation and benchmarking of emissions across the full value chain of commodities, tracking and forecasting of carbon prices, and research and reporting on carbon markets.

The Carbon team is growing quickly as we help to drive the pace and scale of the energy transition and to serve different customer segments with integrated analysis. In the Carbon team we model greenhouse gas emissions across a number of different sectors and value chains, including oil and gas, metals and mined commodities. We support clients across the energy value chain to understand and respond to market and portfolio-related climate risks and opportunities by providing comprehensive, decision-useful carbon data and analytics. Some of the services we provide include calculation and benchmarking of emissions across the full value chain of commodities, tracking and forecasting of carbon prices, and research and reporting on carbon markets.

Role Purpose

This role will serve as part of Wood Mackenzie’s Carbon research team. This is an excellent opportunity to join a strong, global team and make a major contribution to decarbonization and the energy transition at a global scale.

You will work together with colleagues across our Carbon Research, Metals & Mining Research, Data and Product teams to calibrate, improve and expand our emissions data and research, ensuring we remain at the leading edge of this critical analysis. This may include but is not limited to expanding scope 3 emissions coverage, coverage of additional greenhouse gas emissions beyond CO2, as well as integrating carbon pricing assumptions into our models to continue improving the assessment of assets’ and companies’ value at risk from emissions.

Emissions data and modelling contributes to Wood Mackenzie’s Emissions Benchmarking Tool (EBT), Lens and numerous other tools and services; as such, you will become a go-to person to support internal stakeholders and clients. Importantly, you will also develop your own relationships with industry partners. This will be to establish a knowledge base to test assumptions on methodologies, as well as to represent Wood Mackenzie’s research in a high-quality way to customers.

Main Responsibilities

The candidate is expected to:

  • Support the modelling and delivery of Wood Mackenzie’s GHG emissions estimations in the Metals & Mining sector. This requires collaboration with data engineers, commodity experts in the Metals & Mining Research team and others. Specifically, this entails:
    • Continuously improving our data and processes, troubleshooting as needed and establishing best practices
    • Ensuring consistency and methodological alignment and across all commodities for emissions
    • Calibrating emissions forecasts against public sources and corporate reporting
    • Testing the robustness of emissions metrics (including corporate/economic metrics such as value at risk)
  • Support our Sales and Marketing team to drive commercial success, including client support, product demos and industry engagement.
  • Contribute to written analysis and other research to highlight interesting and relevant trends in emissions for various commodities.

Qualifications

Knowledge and experience requirement:

  • 2-3 years of work experience related to emissions quantification, decarbonisation and/or the Metals & Mining sector
  • A good understanding of the value chain of commodities within the Metals & Mining sector
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities, plus eye for detail, which has been proven in your academic and work experience to date.
  • Ability to comfortably collect, manipulate and interpret data, as well as articulate your findings in a clear and insightful manner.
  • Strong communication skills in written and verbal English are necessary
  • Must be comfortable interacting with clients and industry stakeholders across different time zones and as part of a global team.
  • Self-driven. Capable of switching between the roles of an individual contributor and a collaborator.
  • Passionate, with a deep intellectual curiosity about the energy transition.
