About the team

The Registration Investigations Team (RIT) sits within the Professional Regulation Directorate and plays a vital role in supporting the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s purpose of protecting the public and maintaining confidence in the nursing and midwifery professions.
Our team provides legal advice and case management support in relation to registration decisions, including appeals, restoration applications and cases involving incorrect or fraudulent entry to the register. We work closely with the Registrar and Assistant Registrar to ensure decisions are lawful, fair and proportionate.
As part of a collaborative and supportive legal team, you will directly contribute to maintaining the integrity of the register by ensuring all decisions are evidence‑based, legally robust and aligned with our statutory responsibilities.
Your role and impact

As a Lawyer in the Registration Investigations Team, you will play a key role in supporting the NMC’s statutory responsibilities through high-quality legal advice and advocacy.
A core part of the role is case presentation. You will prepare and present cases before the NMC’s Investigating Committee and Appeal Hearing Panels, and where required, in court. You will exercise confident advocacy and ensure that cases are presented clearly, fairly and in accordance with legislation and public law principles
You will provide clear and robust legal advice on registration matters including appeals, restoration applications, and cases involving incorrect or fraudulent entries to the register.
Working closely with colleagues across the NMC, you will contribute to case conferences, support the progression of complex cases, and help determine the NMC’s position on registration issues. You will ensure your advice and decision‑making consistently uphold the NMC’s values and support timely, fair and proportionate outcomes that protect the public and reinforce trust in the integrity of the register
This role offers the opportunity to make a tangible impact by supporting decisions that protect the public and maintain trust in the professions we regulate.
What you’ll bring

We are looking for a qualified lawyer with strong legal judgement and the ability to communicate complex legal issues clearly and persuasively.
You will be a solicitor or barrister with a current practising certificate and experience of advocacy before tribunals, panels or courts.
Experience in regulatory or public‑law environments, or previous involvement in presenting cases before professional or statutory panels, is highly desirable
You will bring strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret legislation and regulatory frameworks to reach balanced and defensible decisions. You will also be highly organised, able to manage competing priorities and deliver high-quality legal work within tight deadlines.
Equally important is your ability to work collaboratively, build strong professional relationships and contribute to a supportive team environment.
If you are motivated by meaningful legal work and want to contribute to protecting the public and upholding professional standards, we would love to hear from you.

About
Our vision is for safe and effective nursing and midwifery practice across the four countries of the UK – regulated and supported by the NMC – a fit for the future organisation, with fairness and equity at the heart of everything we do. Our role is to protect the public and maintain confidence in the nursing and midwifery professions. As the largest independent regulator in Europe of more than 860,000 nursing and midwifery professionals, we have a crucial role in making this a reality. We do this by setting and promoting high education and professional standards for all future and registered nurses and midwives in the UK and nursing associates in England. We also ensure every nurse, midwife and nursing associate on our Register meets clear standards of conduct and practice which protects the public and the reputation of our professions.  We have a duty to investigate concerns and to take steps to protect the public in the relatively rare instances where we need to limit or restrict a nurse, midwife or nursing associate’s right to practise.   We are building a new NMC with integrity, fairness, respect, equity and effectiveness at its core.   We are determined to improve and modernise our culture and ways of working. This will ensure that the public and professionals feel confident in our work.
