We are looking for a hands on Senior IT Infrastructure Engineer to support the day to day IT operations and maintenance of the Gladiator Core Systems Infrastructure and Services (GCSS).
The role will be based in the new, custom built facility at RAF Waddington, near Lincoln.
Team: The local infrastructure team is comprised of 4 team members managing a busy workload of system sustainment and system change across various technology stacks to include Windows Server, RedHat Linux, VMWare – the work is varied with a focus on customer delivery. You will be required to work within a small local team and a wider BDUK team of technical SME’s to deliver the service to the MoD customer.
Responsibilities:
- Coordinating all activity relating to the IT Infrastructure and front end IT services in support of the programme, liaising with programme manager to plan appropriate schedules of activity to minimise operational disruption.
- Responsible for team activities relating to BAU IT Infrastructure Administration; troubleshoot server, network and end user compute IT issues, maintenance of system security, administration of system user access controls and system monitoring. Capacity planning, backup and disaster recovery planning.
- Lead, co-ordinate and prioritise the IT admin team’s activities relating to Incident management, Change, Release and configuration management of IT infrastructure and supporting end user computing services.
- Lead a small IT Admin team with hands-on troubleshooting, repair, maintenance, reconfiguration, and deployment of IT Infrastructure and front end computing services in support of the programme.
- Able to employ strict change control and release governance to ensure strict configuration alignment for all IT environments used in support of the live service.
- Ensure appropriate system and operating documentation is maintained to ensure the safe and proper operation if IT services in support of the programme.
- Respond to vulnerability assessments, plan and co-ordinate resources and outages related to remediation activities such as patching and system lock downs in line with stringent security accreditation demands and to uphold the security posture of the IT infrastructure and end user computing service.
- Responsible for all IT infrastructure reporting requirements (Performance and Availability) ensuring adherence to system KPIs.
- Manage team’s availability to ensure appropriate support coverage and co-ordinate out of hour’s system remediation activities such as patching and software release.
- Assess the technical capabilities of the Sys Admin team and develop training plans to assure the technical capability of the team.
There will be on occasion the need to work outside of standard office hours to support the system and user demand.
Basic required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology or equivalent Work Experience in the field
- 5 Years Experience managing highly available IT Infrastructure and End User Computing
- Ability to obtain security clearance requirement for this job (U.K. Developed Vetting (non-caveated)
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills in English.

- RedHat Certified System Administrator
- Microsoft MCSE
The ideal candidate will bring a wealth of system administration and system design experience , be able to adapt and deliver in a fast paced environment, and have in-depth understanding of system security. Experience working within in UK government and security classified networks is highly desirable. This role is ideal for someone looking to challenge themselves technically on a daily basis.
