Senior Legal Counsel – Financial Markets & Corporate Advisory (fixed term)

Mō te tūranga | A bit about the role

We’re looking for an experienced Senior Legal Counsel to join Westpac’s Legal team on a fixed term contract until end of March 2027.

In this role, you’ll support our Financial Markets & Corporate Advisory function, partnering closely with stakeholders across Institutional and Business Banking. You’ll work on a diverse mix of complex transactions, regulatory initiatives, and strategic projects, with real visibility across the bank.

It’s a great opportunity to step into a broad, high-impact role where you can apply your expertise while working alongside a collaborative and high-performing team.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Advising on lending and debt capital markets transactions, including corporate and project finance

  • Supporting financial markets documentation (including ISDA agreements and related arrangements)

  • Providing regulatory and compliance advice, including supporting regulatory change initiatives

  • Contributing to corporate advisory work such as disclosures, sustainability and governance reporting

  • Partnering with stakeholders across Legal, Risk and the business to deliver practical, commercial advice

  • Managing relationships with external counsel where required

  • LLB with a current NZ practising certificate

  • Around 8+ years’ PQE, ideally in banking & finance or a related area

  • Strong experience in drafting, negotiation and complex transactions

  • Exposure to financial markets, lending or regulatory environments

  • A pragmatic, commercial mindset and the ability to simplify complex issues

  • Strong communication skills and confidence working with senior stakeholders
