We’re looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our Technology Solutions team within the Engineering Digital Practice embedded in projects and collaborating with digital teams across UK Wide. This role is available in Edinburgh, Manchester, Birmingham, Cardiff and Epsom.

Your role

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will take technical ownership of projects and lead teams to deliver advanced digital solutions for engineering and transportation projects. You’ll define architecture, drive integration of software and data platforms, embed “safe by design” principles, and coach engineers to raise delivery quality.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading technical delivery and coordinating interfaces across multiple disciplines.
  • Defining secure, scalable architectures and setting assurance approaches for projects.
  • Driving integration strategies that improve automation, reporting, and decision‑making.
  • Championing Agile and DevOps practices; fostering continuous improvement and delivery quality.
  • Coaching and mentoring engineers; contributing technical narratives and pricing input to bids.
  • Presenting complex technical solutions to clients and stakeholders with clarity and confidence.

This role offers the opportunity to influence technical strategy and collaborate across the UK and internationally to deliver integrated, future‑ready solutions.

About you

We are seeking a professional Senior Software Engineer who combines advanced technical expertise with leadership capability. The ideal candidate will:

  • Take ownership of technical outcomes and lead teams within their discipline.
  • Communicate complex concepts clearly to clients and stakeholders, building trusted relationships.
  • Instil good engineering practices, including security, quality, and “safe by design” principles.
  • Show resilience, adaptability, and a proactive approach to problem-solving and continuous improvement.
  • Mentor engineers and contribute to technical strategy and innovation.

Essential skills

These are the skills and experiences that will help you excel in this role. Some candidates may have all of them, others may have many but not all. If you’re passionate about the role and bring relevant strengths, we’d love to hear from you.

  • Significant professional experience, ideally within the engineering sector, with a track record of leading technical delivery on complex projects.
  • Strong programming capability (e.g., C#, Python, JavaScript/HTML/CSS) and proficiency in modern web application development (e.g., Angular, React, or Blazor).
  • Advanced competence in SQL/database architecture and integration with cloud platforms (Azure preferred).
  • Practical knowledge of Agile, DevOps, and CI/CD with emphasis on engineering quality and traceability.
  • Ability to automate workflows and integrate applications through APIs (e.g., Python, PowerShell).
  • Proficient at designing secure, scalable architectures, technical assurance, and system integration.
  • Experience leveraging Microsoft Power Platform (e.g., Power BI, PowerApp, Power Automate) to accelerate reporting and automation.
  • Experience reviewing and assuring technical deliverables against standards and compliance.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills for client and team leadership including mentoring engineers.

Desirable skills

Chartered or Incorporated status with a recognised institution (e.g., IET, ICE, BCS) or demonstrable equivalent professional standing would be advantageous. We also value certifications in cloud technologies (e.g. Azure), Agile, or Scrum. Experience managing technical interfaces across multiple disciplines, following governance processes, and delivering technical training is desirable. Knowledge of transportation or engineering-related applications and experience developing plugins / working with APIs for geometry-based solutions within CAD software would be an asset.
