About the Role

The Opportunity

In a cloud software world, who you are and what you have access to determines the risk associated with your accounts being compromised, Abnormal Security aims to build a comprehensive tool to understand the employees of our customers, and aid security professionals in assessing the risks and threats impacting their employee base. Help us build a new layer of protection that will give enterprises the same level of security for their cloud offerings as Abnormal Security’s industry leading products do in the email security space.

We’re looking to add a Staff Backend Software Engineer to our team of world class engineers. The individual in this role will shape and elevate our engineering teams within the Behavioral Security Products division. This role straddles the line of velocity and excellence.

What You’ll Do

As a Staff Backend Software Engineer in Behavioral Event Security Products, you will:

  • Be a leader and mentor for a team of strong engineers distributed across the United Kingdom and Asia that collaborates closely with teams across the globe
  • Build and maintain high-throughput, low-latency systems that process billions of events per day to enable detection of compromised cloud accounts
  • Obsessively partner with our customers to gather their feedback and quickly iterate to improve our systems
  • Help define the vision and strategy of the platform’s tech stack to improve customer outcomes, while making it scalable and maintainable, and effect this both directly and indirectly taking this vision through to outcomes
  • Own and develop data-rich, consumer-grade APIs that provide a singular platform for visibility, config management, and active detection. Define and support the SLAs for these APIs, enabling the building of Abnormal’s world class real time detection systems on top of them.
  • Create a magical work environment with colleagues and memorable interview process for candidates.

This is a leadership role on the team and you will be expected to contribute both code and guidance to the team: you will be accountable for delivering great solutions and simultaneously making the team around you better.

You are someone who wants to make an impact. You are passionate about solving customer problems and have built up a base of skills and experience in backend and distributed systems development to do so. You want to apply those skills on a problem that leaves the world in a better place.

We are a scrappy team: we are building products from scratch - this means you should be comfortable with a level of uncertainty beyond what you’d find at a more mature company or even a more mature team at Abnormal. Not every project will come with a well defined PRD - that’s expected and we expect this engineer to go dig in and figure out what to do. This also means occasionally we’ll ask you to do things that may not strictly fit the role of a “backend engineer” - it might mean jumping on a customer call, or digging in to help fix a frontend bug.

We are also not only a remote team, but a very distributed team, as such you will need to have excellent communication skills across both verbal and written mediums. You will need to be just as comfortable on a zoom call as writing a 1 pager project proposal to be shared across the team for technical feedback.

Must Have Skills
  • 8+ years of backend development experience with specific expertise in distributed systems, data pipelines and data processing techniques of a scale of ~billions of transactions each day
  • 5+ years of production support experience for enterprise-class customers
  • 5+ years of experience based backend systems development in Golang, Java, C++ or a similar language. At least 4 years of system design experience
  • Proven experience owning testing as well as development of all software solutions
  • Proven experience working with agile development methodologies (both scrum and kanban)
  • Proven experience working effectively with cross-functional teams across multiple time zones with with remote stakeholders
Nice to Have Skills
  • Experience with AWS and/or Azure, Postgres, Kafka, Redis, Lucene/ElasticSearch or similar
  • Experience with API platform development
  • Experience of developing backend application with Python
