Role Description

The Incident and Disaster Team aims to reduce Customer pain by speeding up incident response through standardized incident management processes and tooling as well as through incident prevention strategies such as disaster readiness, chaos testing, safer tooling, stronger controls, automated conformance tests, and better education.

At Dropbox, Site Reliability Engineers/Software Engineers are mission-critical for Dropbox success. The SRE team has major impact inside of Dropbox engineering from testing our disaster readiness and building our in-house multi-exabyte storage system, Magic Pocket. Check out the Dropbox Tech Blog to learn more!

The Site Reliability Team consists of hybrid systems and software engineers who are responsible and take ownership for management of large scale infrastructure while improving reliability and automation. SREs are integrated within the Platform team, and we're looking for engineers who want to be a part of developing infrastructure software, maintaining it, and scaling it. You will join a small, impactful team within Dropbox that significantly influences the world.

Our Engineering Career Framework is viewable by anyone outside the company and describes what’s expected for our engineers at each of our career levels. Check out our blog post on this topic and more here.

Responsibilities
  • Build scalable infrastructure to manage metadata for hundreds of billions of files, hundreds of petabytes of user data, and millions of concurrent connections
  • Design the systems and processes that Dropbox engineers use to manage and deploy their software into production
  • Automate the server provisioning process to reduce the labor of our networking engineering and datacenter operations teams. Once we plug a new server in, it walks itself through all aspects of provisioning to join the fleet without any human involvement
  • Expected to bring a voice to the table and partner 100% with the rest of engineering, working together to come up with solutions that meet the needs of the business
  • Minimize risk of reliability related failure outcomes as pertaining to durability, availability, performance, and correctness

Many teams at Dropbox run Services with on-call rotations, which entails being available for calls during both core and non-core business hours. If a team has an on-call rotation, all engineers on the team are expected to participate in the rotation as part of their employment. Applicants are encouraged to ask for more details of the rotations to which the applicant is applying.

Requirements
  • BS degree in Computer Science or related technical field involving coding (e.g., physics or mathematics), or equivalent technical experience
  • 10+ years of industry experience
  • Demonstrated experience in leading multi-phase, cross-team reliability efforts, and playing a key role in setting medium-to-long term technical strategies for business-impacting projects
  • Experience with algorithms, data structures, complexity analysis and software development
  • Ability to diagnose technical problems, debug code, and automate routine tasks
  • Experience owning and delivering semi-annual/annual goals for a team, identifying and solving open-ended problems that require tough prioritization, and defining technical solutions or efficient operational processes that level up the team
  • Strong track record of autonomously defining and delivering technical roadmaps for larger projects, including managing cross-team dependencies, and taking proactive responsibility for decisions and failures
  • Ability to actively keep customer needs in mind, leveraging input from product stakeholders to determine the right technical solutions for delivering customer value quickly, and making informed decisions that balance customer and business goals
  • Ability to understand business context to make independent technical decisions, prioritize the right things, and propose appropriate scope adjustments when necessary
Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong knowledge of risk management practices and business impact analysis methodologies.
  • Experience serving as a role model, coaching and mentoring teammates (especially those looking to grow into senior roles), providing thoughtful and constructive feedback, and spreading knowledge through talks, blog posts, or documentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to push boundaries to generate and implement breakthrough ideas, create an environment supporting experimentation, and introduce and drive adoption of changes in the organization.
  • Proficiency in tailoring messages to various audiences, building deep cross-functional relationships, facilitating critical conversations, and championing community building and inclusion initiatives within the organization.
