Job title: UX Design Lead (6 Month FTC)

Location: London / Bristol / Edinburgh

Salary: £75,000 - £95,000

Team: Home Energy Management Systems (HEMS)

Reporting To: Lead Designer

Kaluza reimagines energy to bring net-zero within everyone’s reach. Our intelligent platform enables energy utilities to unlock the full value of a radically changing energy system and propel us to a future where renewable energy is sustainable, affordable and accessible for all.

The energy transition is one of the toughest, most complex challenges of our time. At Kaluza, we’re not just participating in it; we’re building the engine to accelerate it. We believe a net-zero world is within everyone’s reach, and our mission is to create the platform that gets us there.

Our technology is the blueprint for a sustainable, resilient, and affordable energy system. We empower the world’s biggest energy suppliers to revolutionise their operations and, most importantly, enable their customers to become active drivers of decarbonisation. From smart electric vehicle charging to intelligent grid balancing, we turn the complexity of the energy system into an opportunity for a cleaner world. This isn't just theory; our platform is already serving millions of customers and is set for global expansion.

What will I be doing?

We’re building the future, and we need a design leader to deliver the blueprint. You’d be joining at the most exciting moment possible, as we take our revolutionary Home Energy Management System (HEMS) product from Alpha to its first public launch in Australia.

Imagine empowering customers to seamlessly control their electric vehicles, solar, and home batteries from one place. Picture them effortlessly maximising their clean energy usage. Envision the ground-breaking new services you’ll help create. That’s the world you’ll be designing.

You’ll be taking over the lead of a global effort, working hand-in-glove with our team in Australia. As we rapidly develop new features for launch, there will be a high volume of UI work as you onboard. For this reason, as much as we value discovery; we’re looking for an influential hands-on design lead who can ship superb work while mentoring others through expertise and example.

You’ll do this by:

  • Establishing the design playbook of home energy. You will move beyond conventional design patterns to define how users interact with a complex ecosystem of smart devices. This involves championing behavioural design, spotting emerging patterns in our global pilots, and using a mix of qualitative and quantitative data to decide which interactions become our standard.
  • Act as the storyteller for the Home Energy Management System (HEMS) experience. You’ll build momentum and a shared vision. We expect you to have a proven history of proactively "roadshowing" your work—from early concepts to polished demos—across product, engineering, and commercial teams to build alignment and excitement for bold design directions.
  • Translate complexity into simple, trust-building products. The core of this challenge is designing for two audiences at once: tech-savvy early adopters and users who are new to home electrification. You’ll need a gift for making intricate energy optimisations feel effortless and intuitive, building user confidence and trust in the technology  at every step.
  • Mentor and elevate the craft of your peers. As a design lead, you will be a force multiplier for the wider UX team. You will foster a culture of excellence by leading thoughtful design critiques, facilitating co-design workshops, pushing us to improve and setting a high bar for quality and strategic thinking with your own work.

Is this the job for me?

Ideally you’ll have:

  • Deep expertise in Figma and systems thinking. You have proven experience not just using, but creating and maintaining design systems, playbooks, and frameworks, ensuring quality is kept to a high standard.
  • A love for hands-on UI design, paired with a visionary mindset. You are a master practitioner at heart, but you go beyond execution. You have clear, well-formed opinions and are unafraid to make bold, challenging suggestions that push our design craft forward.
  • A portfolio that demonstrates strategic and commercial impact. You can show how you've transformed complex technical systems (like IoT or data platforms) into simple, elegant experiences. Crucially, your work demonstrates a clear understanding of how UX differentiates a product from its competitors and helps achieve commercial goals, such as winning new clients.
  • A pragmatic and data-informed approach to leadership. You don't just use insights; you ensure both qualitative findings and analytics (we use Mixpanel) are actionable, impactful, and used to validate design decisions.
  • Exceptional relationship-building and leadership skills. You are adept at bringing people along the journey to foster collaboration and ensure knowledge-sharing. You lead through influence, proactively communicating with your teams and the Head of UX about the resources, capabilities, or trade-offs needed to achieve objectives and align every decision with the existing Kaluza wide UX strategy.

From us you’ll get

  • An additional 9% of your salary to spend on a wide range of benefits, including your   pension, a selection of lifestyle, health and green benefits, or simply take it as cash!
  • Private Medical Insurance and Life Assurance
  • 26 days holiday, including a day off for your birthday you can take at any point
  • Flexible bank holidays, 5 of which you can choose to take whenever you like (3 are fixed days)
  • Progressive leave policies with no qualifying service periods, including 26 weeks full pay if you have a new addition to your family
  • Discretionary annual bonus
  • A dedicated personal learning budget
  • Flexible working — we trust you to work in a way that suits your lifestyle

Even better? You’ll have access to these benefits from day 1 when you join.

We want the best people

We’re keen to meet people from all walks of life — our view is that the more inclusive we are, the better our work will be. We want to build teams which represent a variety of experiences, perspectives and skills, and we recognise talent on the basis of merit and potential.

We understand some people may not apply for jobs unless they tick every box. But if you're excited about joining us and think you have some of what we're looking for, even if you're not 100% sure, we'd still love to hear from you.
