As a Principal Software Engineer, you will lead the design and technical strategy for the Group’s flagship Merchant Modernisation Project, delivering full-stack solutions with a strong focus on front-end development using Next.js or React, while also running the backend services using .NET and .NET Core.
Our Principal Software Engineers are hands-on technical subject-matter experts, accountable for significant portions of large platforms end-to-end, from teams to the security, performance, and reliability. You will demonstrate experience with coding, designing, and building business driven payments solutions at scale and velocity. While having no direct reports, you will be guiding and mentoring the engineers across your crew to scaffold the development of elegant, well tested, and maintainable code and or software solutions.
You will come with a proven expertise in Full Stack engineering, driving a major set of technical decisions in design and architecture and translate this into pragmatic engineering design decisions. You will partner with stakeholders designing our overall tech direction, advising and influencing on technologies and complex integration strategies, and AI enablement.

This role will join our technology leadership team of the Acquisition Engagement & Retention Crew part or our wider in Everyday Business Banking Domain. Everyday Business Banking support critical payment services—including cheques, bulk electronic payments, merchant acquiring (with terminal tech), and high-value international transactions. The team underpins 40% of Australia’s economy, enabling over $90 billion in daily transactions through reliable, scalable systems that power nearly every customer-facing channel at CBA.
As the Principal Engineer, you’ll be a core member of our team. You will provide core technology expertise to inform technical strategy, be responsible for the design of the solutions for complex challenges within the crew. You’ll have a strong risk mindset and take a security from the first line of code approach. Those around you to invest in their own engineering craft, as well as building class leading applications is something that you’ll be passionate about.

Have solid hands-on experience developing engaging UI, BFF microservices using GraphQL, data access layers, and driving innovative process improvements that add significant business value.
Are knowledgeable and experienced in AI coding assisting technology: Github CoPilot, Cline, Cursor, Figma AI, etc.
Are passionate designing, developing and deploying high quality software solutions as you are shaping the technical evolution of this system by contributing to end-to-end design, implementation.
Have experience with the full software development lifecycle and delivery using agile practices with specific focus on the following concepts: source control, CI/CD, automated testing, infrastructure cloud pipelines, logging and monitoring.
Are ready to execute state-of-the-art coding practices, driving high quality outcomes to solve core business objectives and minimise risks.
Have previous experience in the banking domain will be advantageous.
Have hands on experience with Cloud native development in AWS.
Tech skills
We use a broad range of tools, languages, and frameworks. We don’t expect you to possess knowledge of all, but experience or exposure with some, or their equivalents, will set you up for success in this team:
Microsoft .Net Technologies such as C#, .Net Framework, .Net Core, MVC, Web API essential.
Front End: React.js, Next.js, JavaScript Framework.
Expertise with Microservices, GraphQL API, Apollo GraphQL, and Restful API design patterns.
Databases – PostgreSQL, Oracle.
DevOps and CI/CD – Github Actions, TeamCity.
Docker and Kubernetes experience.
Experience with monitoring and observability tools like Prometheus/Grafana, Splunk, AWS Cloudwatch.
AI & Machine learning and LLM knowledge desired.
GenAI tools – Cline, Cursor, AWS Bedrock desirable.
