As a Staff Software Engineer (Full Cycle), you will lead the design and technical strategy for the Group’s flagship Merchant Modernisation Project, delivering secure, high-performance, and scalable enterprise solutions using the tools but not limited to Java, with expertise in frameworks such as Spring Boot, Hibernate, and AWS functions etc.

It is also dedicated to delivering the best workplace technology experience for our over 53.000 people across CBA and focused on providing the latest tools, technology, and resources to enhance the way we work together and empower our people to achieve more for our customers.
This role will see you join the Merchants Technology Crew, within the Everyday Business Banking Practice, which integrates people, processes, and platforms to support critical payment services—including cheques, bulk electronic payments, merchant acquiring (with terminal tech), and high-value international transactions. The team underpins 40% of Australia’s economy, enabling over $90 billion in daily transactions through reliable, scalable systems that power nearly every customer-facing channel at CBA.
We’re interested in hearing from people who:
Have proven experience delivering enterprise-grade Java solutions in a complex enterprise level environment.
Provide technical leadership and governance across the full software delivery lifecycle.
Design and implement scalable, secure and complex solutions specifically designed using the java ecosystem.
Deliver high-quality, maintainable code using Java frameworks such as Spring Boot, Hibernate, and Kafka.
Contribute to strategic planning and ensure technical alignment with broader engineering objectives.
Collaborate effectively, mentor peers, and foster continuous improvement across squads and crews.
Hold AWS certification (Associate level or higher)
Tech skills
Proficiency in Java including multithreading, collections, and memory management.
Strong experience with Spring Framework (Spring Boot, Spring MVC, Spring Security).
Proficiency in RESTful API design and microservices architecture essential.
Familiarity with Java Persistence API (JPA) and Hibernate.
SDK experience.
Cloud platforms: AWS services (EC2, ECS, Cloud formation, Lambda, S3, Secrets Manager, KMS, IAM services etc.).
AI exposure - coding agent, automation, day to day activities highly desirable.
CICD tooling - GitHub, GitHub Actions, Snyk, Sysdig, Sonar etc.
Proficient in Bruno/Postman, Docker, and Kubernetes.
