Senior Tax Accountant

United Kingdom; Remote working options available

The Opportunity:

Reporting to the VP, Tax, the Senior Tax Accountant is responsible for multiple tax compliance matters in the UK and will be part of the European tax team based at Assurant’s European headquarters in the UK. You will ensure that the group’s UK tax compliance obligations are met including indirect tax filings and US GAAP tax reporting and also to assist the European tax team in preparing EU tax returns and providing tax advice.

This would be a great role for a newly qualified tax professional looking for a first move in-house; an opportunity to manage UK indirect tax compliance, implement process improvements and scope to be involved in varied Pan-European tax advisory work including client deals, group restructuring, transfer pricing, and tax audits.

Indirect tax compliance

  • Prepare and file quarterly UK group VAT returns including several non-standard processes such as partial exemption calculations and annual adjustments, TOMS, second-hand margin scheme sales, importation and Domestic Reverse Charge accounting 
  • Prepare and file quarterly UK group IPT returns
  • Work with finance colleagues to reconcile IPT and VAT control accounts
  • Prepare tax payment and input VAT leakage forecasting
  • Advise treasury colleagues on monthly / quarterly tax payments due
  • Support with the preparation of European VAT and IPT returns
  • Support with VAT and IPT audits across UK and Europe 

Direct tax compliance

  • Prepare US GAAP quarterly reporting (current and deferred tax calculations) for UK group companies
  • Forecast permanent differences for US tax accounting
  • Assist with UK corporation tax computations
  • Assist with the UK R&D tax credit claims
  • Assist with UK tax disclosures for legal entity financial statements
  • Prepare 5471 tax packs for US tax returns
  • Prepare intercompany transaction data for transfer pricing purposes 

Other

  • Work with US tax and European finance teams
  • Focus on innovation and process improvements for VAT and IPT compliance and automation
  • Remain current on tax changes and implement these within the business
  • Assist with provision of tax advice on new client deals and restructuring strategies
  • Deal with ad hoc tax queries from the business
  • Manage the growing digitalisation of tax reporting across UK and Europe, including the UK Making Tax Digital regime

You Have:

  • Experience; Qualified accountant (eg ICAEW) or qualified tax adviser (eg CIOT). Will consider qualified by experience or trained with HM Revenue & Customs
  • Experience working in UK tax (either in practice or in industry)
  • Experience working in the insurance industry preferred but not essential
  • Experience working in the tax technology field beneficial but not essential
  • Indirect tax knowledge (specifically VAT) required
  • IT skills in Microsoft Excel
  • Knowledge of / or working with finance ERP systems, eg Oracle and Alphatax preferred but not essential
  • Review existing processes and implement process improvement
