👩‍💻 The Role 

Location: While this position is posted in a specific location, all of Oyster’s positions are fully remote, and you can work from home. Forever. To create the best experience for our new hire (you?!), this role does require that you are an EU citizen and based within +1 / +3 UTC.

Oyster is looking for an experienced attorney to lead our corporate legal team in support of Oyster’s goal to become the world leader in global distributed working.  In addition to corporate compliance work, the successful candidate will provide support to the Corporate Secretary, serve as a Director on our foreign-subsidiary boards, as well as support any corporate transactions.  The successful candidate will lead a team of governance, risk, and compliance specialists and work with partners across the organization (both within and outside of Legal) to make sure reasonable and appropriate measures are in place to maintain governance, ethical and compliant business operations, and provide risk guidance and recommendations to Executive Team Members on compliance issues. Reporting to the General Counsel, your responsibilities will include some of the following:

Key Responsibilities

  • Day-to-Day Management of Oyster’s corporate governance program, including management of the entity management team and serving as a Director for Oyster subsidiaries.
  • Day-to-day management of Oyster’s compliance program, including management of the risk and compliance teams.
  • Provide responsive and pragmatic legal advice to carry out the company's business and protect the company's interests and rights.
  • Development and implementation of company policies in collaboration with other Oyster teams.
  • Responsible for Oyster’s SOC I/II and BCorp compliance efforts, which include ongoing monitoring of control environments, evolving reporting, and oversight to match organizational expansion.
  • Create and manage effective action plans in response to audit discoveries and compliance violations.
  • Identify risks and causes of main legal contingencies or exposures and work cross-functionally to mitigate same.
  • Evaluate changes in legislation and jurisprudence that might impact business and work cross-functionally to ensure compliance with the same.
  • Analytics experience and ability to incorporate compliance monitoring in existing business processes.
  • Respond to requests for information related to Oyster’s regulatory and compliance obligations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Core Requirements

  • EU Citizenship is mandatory.
  • Juris Doctorate or LLM, or like qualification.
  • 7+ years of legal experience, with 5+ years in an in-house counsel role, preferably at a publicly traded company
  • 2+ years of people management experience.
  • Prior experience in a multinational company or dealing with cross-border legal issues.
  • Prior experience managing corporate subsidiaries and/or acting as corporate secretary or subsidiary director.
  • Experience building relationships across the organization and managing the full cycle of compliance projects, including obtaining key stakeholder buy-in.
  • A strong communicator who works for not only their own success but the success of the team.
  • Demonstrates the ability to learn new things, work on a variety of issues, and work under pressure in order to add value to the company.
  • Highly organized, proactive, and uses independent judgment.
  • Be competent. Be unquestionably ethical. Have humility and a sense of humor. Work hard and help others. Celebrate wins. 
  • Experience with remote work.
  • [BONUS] Prior experience working with EOR, fintech, or SaaS companies.
  • [BONUS] Familiarity with Notion and Asana, Project Management Principles, Audit or compliance certifications.
